Bring back corporal pûnishment and our educational system will work again.

Image
“Tell a child to kneel down and face the wall, the child will come back tomorrow with his parents and they'll tell you that because of that kneeling of yesterday that the doctor said that this is his medical report that the child has developed knee cap problem.  Bring back corporal pûnishment and our educational system will work again. I'm among those who corporal pûnishment made and never marred.  Corporal pûnishment instil discipline in us, taught us respect for teachers and elders, built out characters, our behaviors, our relationship with people in the school and outside the environment.  I remember that time, face the wall, frog jump, one leg jump, pick pin. Those were the pûnishment and it depends, if your off3nse is so grev!ous, they'll tell you to go cut a portion of the grass that is appropriate to your age.  So whenever you m!sbehave again and your parents tell you that I'm going to report you to your teacher, you'll see us crying from home. Then discipl...

Allowances That Can Motivate Teachers and Strengthen Our Schools — Numbers 3 and 4 Will Amaze You.

Teacher in the class Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of society . Every day, they invest their time, knowledge, and energy in educating and guiding learners. However, many teachers work under challenging conditions with limited support. To improve their welfare and motivate them to perform at their best, certain allowances are very important. Below are some key allowances that teachers should receive. 1. Teaching/Instructional Materials Allowance Teaching requires the use of various instructional materials such as textbooks, markers, chalk, charts, and other learning aids. In many cases, teachers personally spend their own money to provide these materials so that students can better understand lessons, especially in schools where such resources are lacking. A teaching or instructional materials allowance would support teachers in acquiring the tools needed to deliver effective lessons in the classroom. While it is commendable that many teachers go the extra mile to pur...

Bedbug battle: UNICAL SUG procures 500 mattresses, fumigates hostels

Image
The Students’ Union Government of the University of Calabar has procured 500 new mattresses for students living in the institution’s hostels and initiated fumigation of the facilities to tackle bedbug infestation. The SUG President, Emmanuel Obo, said the intervention followed complaints by students about sleeping on bedbug-infested mattresses in the halls of residence. He spoke on Monday during the unveiling of the mattresses at one of the hostels on campus. Recall that in 2016, the university management supplied 698 new mattresses to the hostels. The then Vice-Chancellor, Zana Akpagu, had, during a visit to the halls of residence, said the mattresses would replace old ones that were already infested with bedbugs. “I was immediately confronted with a reality that many of us have endured for years—the deplorable condition of hostel mattresses across our halls of residence. As a proud Malabite who has personally resided in the hostels since my first year, I understood this challen...

THE FORGOTTEN CLASSROOMS: How Akwa Ibom State is Failing Its Children

Image
I visited a secondary school in Ikot Ekpene last week, and I still can’t shake the image: a classroom of 87 students squeezed onto broken benches, three to a desk meant for two, while rainwater poured through the gaping holes in the roof onto their heads. The teacher, a tired woman in her fifties, was writing on a blackboard that had long ago surrendered most of its paint. Exercise books? Less than half the children had one. Textbooks? The school had received exactly 42 for the entire JSS1–3 population since 2019. That is not education. That is criminal neglect dressed up as policy. We are not a poor state. Akwa Ibom is the highest oil-revenue accruing state in Nigeria month after month, yet our children study under trees and leaking roofs while billions are reportedly spent on flyovers, streetlights that work only during gubernatorial visits, and an airport terminal that has swallowed more money than the entire education budget of some northern states combined. Let us speak plainly...

Why Private Universities Should Benefit from TETFund – LCU VC Speaks.

Image
Education stakeholders have called for the inclusion of private universities in the intervention programmes of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), arguing that the support will strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system. The Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, Oyedunni Sola Arulogun, and the Chancellor of Lead City University, Gabriel Ogunmola, made the call during a colloquium held in honour of Jide Owoeye at 70. Arulogun said if higher education is truly the engine of national development, intervention funds should benefit both public and private universities. She noted that private institutions play a vital role in expanding access to education, developing infrastructure and training skilled manpower, yet they are excluded from key funding support. According to her, extending TETFund support to accredited private universities would improve research, innovation, facilities and help ease the pressure on public universities facing increasing student enrolment. Supportin...

FG DEPLOYS NATIONAL EDUCATION DATA REPOSITORY TO END CERTIFICATE FRAUD, STRENGTHEN ACADEMIC RECORDS INTEGRITY

Image
The Federal Government has intensified efforts to protect the credibility of Nigeria’s education system with the deployment of the Nigeria Education Repository and Data Bank (NERD), a national digital platform designed to secure, digitise, and authenticate academic records across tertiary institutions. The Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, announced the initiative during the National Capacity Building Programme for institutional representatives, describing NERD as critical national infrastructure for safeguarding academic credentials and strengthening education data governance. According to the Minister, the platform supports the Federal Government’s reform agenda under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu by ensuring reliable digital preservation and verification of academic records. Within four months of implementation, the system has preserved nearly 100,000 digital student submissions, integrated over 250 tertiary institutions, and enrolled more than 1...

The Power of Discipline: Lessons from a Simple Parade Drill

Image
Normally, the average human being tends to dislike hard work and easily gets used to a soft life. When people see any opportunity to avoid responsibilities, many are quick to take it. This is why, at times, being firm and strict is necessary. When too much privilege is given, people may begin to abuse it. Even in workplaces, some staff members tend to take advantage of privileges, especially when the boss is very soft or overly considerate. If such privileges are repeatedly abused, they can gradually weaken an organization. This is why some managers and leaders choose to maintain a strict approach. The same applies in schools and classrooms. Being overly relaxed with students can create problems. Once students become used to too much freedom, they may start abusing it. I happen to work in an environment I would describe as a semi-military base, where we often interact and manage certain tasks with military personnel. One thing I appreciate about the military system is the discipli...
