1. Teaching/Instructional Materials Allowance
Teaching requires the use of various instructional materials such as textbooks, markers, chalk, charts, and other learning aids. In many cases, teachers personally spend their own money to provide these materials so that students can better understand lessons, especially in schools where such resources are lacking. A teaching or instructional materials allowance would support teachers in acquiring the tools needed to deliver effective lessons in the classroom. While it is commendable that many teachers go the extra mile to purchase these items themselves, providing an allowance to support them would greatly motivate them. This allowance could be provided at least three times a year.
2. Rural or Hardship Allowance
Many teachers are posted to rural or remote communities where living and working conditions can be very challenging. Access to good roads, electricity, clean water, and other basic amenities may be limited. A rural or hardship allowance would encourage teachers to accept such postings and remain committed to educating students in those communities.
3. Hazard Allowance
Teaching sometimes exposes teachers to health risks within the classroom environment. For example, I once entered a class to teach and noticed that about three learners had Apollo (conjunctivitis). I wondered whether to continue teaching or leave the classroom, but I had no choice because it was the responsibility I had accepted. I continued with the lesson. After leaving the class that day, I felt a scratching sensation in my eyes.
The next day, I entered another class and noticed that about five other students also had Apollo. I still continued teaching. Later that day, my eyes became red, and I realized that I had contracted the infection. I had to spend extra money to buy medication for treatment. Situations like this show that teachers are sometimes exposed to health risks while performing their duties. A hazard allowance would help teachers manage such unexpected health expenses. Although some states have enrolled teachers in health insurance schemes, which is commendable, a small allowance for unforeseen hazards would still go a long way in supporting teachers.
4. Wardrobe Allowance
Teachers are expected to appear neat, decent, and presentable every day. As role models to students, they must dress properly and maintain a professional appearance. This often means teachers regularly change their clothes and invest in maintaining a neat wardrobe. A wardrobe allowance would help teachers meet the standard of appearance expected of them. When teachers appear neat and confident, students are more likely to respect the profession and may even be inspired to become teachers in the future. This allowance should be provided at least quarterly and should be consistent.
